How FPD Recycling is addressing the global e-waste crisis

The UN’s The Global E-waste Monitor 2020 predicted global e-waste will reach 74 million tonnes by 2030, which is almost a doubling in just 16 years. This makes e-waste the world’s fastest-growing domestic waste stream, with only 17.4 per cent collected and recycled in 2019.

With sales of TVs and PC monitors increasing year on year, what we do with end-of-life screens has never been as pressing.

At FPD Recycling, it’s our mission to not only divert Flat Screen Displays (FPDs) from the landfill but to turn this potentially hazardous material into something useful. FPDs contain many valuable in-demand materials including metals such as aluminium, CRMs, steel or copper, glass, plastic and some rare and precious materials like gold or ITO (Indium Tin Oxide). All of them can be safely and efficiently recovered to be reused but the hazardous parts such as lead and mercury need to be removed first.

That is where our technology comes in, modernising existing WEEE recycling to make the process safe, profitable and sustainable.

Here are three ways we do this:

  1. Using the latest AI-powered extraction technology

To achieve the circular economy, at FPD, we are passionate about leveraging the latest innovations. Powered by the latest in AI-powered robotic technology for smart de-manufacturing and safe depollution, our FPD PRO is the most advanced robotic FPD depollution machine in the market.

It can process over 60+ screens per hour and eliminates the need for manual removal of hazardous mercury tubing from TVs and Monitors.

We can also remotely monitor, offering continuous diagnostics and highly detailed reports available, that outline the exact number of processed devices, date and time of processing, as well as its make, model and weight.

  • Minimising barriers to entry for our customers

It’s important to us to build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with our customers. That’s why we offer a pay-per-use subscription model, that minimises capital outlay for the recycler. We call this model Technology-as-a-Service or ‘TaaS’.

Under this model, we keep the responsibility for our machines throughout their entire life cycle. The customer has full use of the machines for as long as they need and pay only for the number of devices processed. We also cover the cost of its maintenance and upkeep.

  • Offering an end-to-end solution for our customers

We are not simply providing recycling equipment.

We are partners, advising our customers on how they can drive a better circular economy in a sustainable and profitable way.

That is what drives us – it’s why we do what we do. Together, we can ensure a future where every used flat screen in the world becomes a valuable commodity rather than hazardous waste.
